Rhetorical Analysis of a Visual

Visual media is something that I am pretty comfortable with. I have ran multiple social media accounts for different organizations throughout my time in college, so I have a decent amount of experience in making them. To me, having good visual media is super important. If you are trying to advertise for your organization, for example, I think having good visual media can make or break you. It is important to know your audience, and create something that they are going to want to see. For example, the poster you would design for a rock climbing club would look very different than one for a sorority.

In this exercise, I found it interesting looking at different posters and examining how they played to their audience. For example, I looked at the poster for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. Taylor's main audience for the poster are her fans. She included elements that appeal to both. For the fans, the poster features a photo of her from each of her 'eras' in a different color, all surrounding a larger photo of her in black and white. Fans have assigned each of her albums to a color, something she has used a lot in her Eras Tour materials. Fans see the color green and know it is Debut, or see pink and immediately think of Lover. She doesn't need to list her albums for fans to know what she's referencing, where as someone who isn't a fan might not get that.

A lot of thought goes into every piece of visual media, and I'm not sure people always realize that. I found it really interesting to dissect a particular poster, and try and think of what that graphic designer was thinking when they made their choices.
